SANDERSON, Florida - A North Florida summer grows back everything that came down in the spring. Swamp Gator ULM is telling rural property owners across Baker and Columbia counties not to wait for the woods to dry out before dealing with it. The Sanderson land clearing and forestry mulching company, run by owner Steve McMichael since 2017, is booking late-summer fuel reduction work on overgrown acreage while the calendar is still open and the work can happen on a schedule.

The Florida Forest Service is specific about how much room a rural home needs. Its Firewise guidance states that "defensible space should extend outward from the home from 30 feet (minimum) to 100 to 200 feet if the home borders heavy wildland fuels." That describes most of what Swamp Gator works on: houses, barns, and shops sitting against planted pine, palmetto, and underbrush thick enough to walk into and disappear.

The part rural owners tend to miss is that the buffer is not permanent. The same agency states that a safety zone "must, however, be treated at one- to three-year intervals to maintain its effectiveness." On a property cleared two summers ago, that interval has already run out. The state also names the method directly, noting that "mechanical treatment (mowing) is a fuel reduction technique that is frequently used when homes are adjacent to wildlands with large amounts of accumulated fuel." That is the category forestry mulching falls into, run at a scale a mower cannot reach.

The practical difference is what happens to the material. A mulching head cuts standing brush, saplings, and undergrowth and leaves it on the ground as chip, so there are no burn piles waiting on a burn authorization and no loads leaving the property. On acreage that needs to come all the way down to workable ground, Swamp Gator handles full land clearing instead, including grading and site prep for owners building, fencing, or putting in pasture.

Timing is the other argument for moving now. Rural owners who wait until conditions turn are competing for the same equipment at the same time, on land that is harder to schedule around. McMichael runs the machines himself, which means one operator and one point of contact from the estimate through the last pass, and a written quote that holds unless the scope of the job changes. Columbia County owners around Lake City and Baker County owners near Sanderson and Macclenny make up most of the current schedule.

"The state puts a number on it, one to three years, and most folks out here are well past that and have not noticed," said McMichael. "Palmetto and brush do not look like a problem in August because everything is green. That is exactly when it is cheapest to knock down. Whoever calls in the middle of a bad stretch is going to pay more and wait longer for the same acre."
